Established in 2023, commonstate operates between Beijing and London, leveraging artistic research as the foundation of its production practice. Our output spans a diverse range, encompassing products, sculptures, moving-images, installations, and the uncategorizable “things” of contemporary discourse.

EXPLORING:
We believe that every practitioner is a medium connecting the past and the future. Practice helps us understand our position within the time.
Thus, amidst the increasingly blurred boundaries of the digital and the physical, we engage in an alternative imagining of future anthropology and archaeology. Through continuous exploration of history and archives, we seek to unearth the materiality of moving-images and the temporality of materials.By reimagining the everyday common states of objects, we delve into the contemporaneity of material and explore the non-linguistic aesthetics that transcend materiality. Our aim is to foster a dialogue that transcends conventional boundaries, sparking discussions that resonate across time and space.

MAKING:
Designers and craftsmen each play their roles, challenging common issues in handmade products such as low efficiency and high damage rates. Through this process, we aim to resist unconscious passive mass production. At commonstate , each item possesses unique features and flaws. Through repeated cycles of research, experimentation, modification, production, use, and the cycle of new and old, time overlaps with itself, much like water disappearing into water.
